Sapphire is a mineral that occurs in the form of Al2O3 single crystals. The colour is determined by impurities such as Fe2+, Fe3+, Cr3+, Ti4+ or V4+.
It has a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale, after diamond.
The rocks where sapphires were found are called pegmatites, which through erosion processes were transported and deposited in alluvium, in the beds of flowing waters. The most important countries in the production of sapphires are Sri Lanka (the old name Ceylon), India, more recently, the USA, Australia and Nigeria.
