Garnet is a mineral from the silicate group, with the chemical composition XII3YIII2(SiO4)3 - X- represents XII bivalent metal ions calcium, magnesium, iron(II) or manganese with trivalent metal ions YIII such as aluminum, iron(III), titanium, vanadium or chrome. Structurally garnets are isolated (island) silicates.

Garnets crystallize in the cubic system. The hardness of the crystals depends on the chemical composition, varying between 6-7.5 on the Mohs scale.

The color is also variable, frequently reddish brown, yellowish green, black, never having a blue color.

They often appear in massive granular forms or short crystals, with a mass that has reached the weight of 700 kg. The chemical composition of the crystals is influenced by the composition of the surrounding rocks (the Pyrop variety is always associated with magnesium-rich rocks).

Garnets are present in peridotites and serpentinites, in metamorphic rocks (gneisses and eclogites) or in the sediments of flowing water valleys.

Most of the crystals were found in the USA, South Africa and Sri Lanka.
