Light Blue Sapphire

This product is a natural round sapphire with a light blue colour and a size between 2.80 and 3.00 mm. The weight of the sapphire is 0.10 carats and it has an excellent clarity with no inclusions visible to the naked eye. The sapphire has been heat treated to improve its appearance and give it a special brilliance. Sapphire comes from Sri Lanka, a country renowned for the quality and variety of its gemstones. Please note that there may be differences in colour between stones depending on the light and viewing angle.

All corundum gemstones are known as sapphires, with the only exception of the ruby-red variant which is called ruby. However, the name sapphire is very common for blue gemstones, but this blue should not be understood as the colour of clear sky, but all shades of blue up to very dark blue and even black.

Sapphire is a mineral that occurs as Al2O3 single crystals. The colour is determined by impurities such as Fe2+, Fe3+, Cr3+, Ti4+ or V4+.

It has a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale, after diamond.

The rocks where sapphires have been found are called pegmatites, which through erosion processes have been transported and deposited in alluvium in river beds. The most important sapphire-producing countries are Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon), India, more recently the USA, Australia and Nigeria.
